Ein Syllabar ist

• eine Silbe als linguistische Einheit und stellt die Assoziation mit seiner visuellen Repräsentation dar,
• der geordnete Bestand an Syllabogrammen einer Silbenschrift, d. h. die Entsprechung eines Alphabetes.

So ist beispielsweise das japanische Schriftsystem eine Mischung aus Logographie (chinesische Kanji) und Silbensymbolen (Kana).
